Tell your Assemblymember and Senator to sign on as a coauthor of AB 14!

Californians are ready and eager to pass AB 14 to show voters who’s really behind political ads trying to buy your vote. It’s the first bill in the nation to require political ads to clearly show their top three true funders, not front groups.

Last year’s version of the California DISCLOSE Act, AB 700, fell short of passing the Senate by only one vote. With two new DISCLOSE Act supporters in the Senate, this is best opportunity ever to pass it.

Nearly $1 billion was spent in California on ballot measures from 2012 to 2016, almost all of it by donors whose true identities were obfuscated on ads by misleading names buried in fine print. Hundreds of millions more was spent on independent expenditures supporting or attacking candidates.

Authored by Assemblymembers Jimmy Gomez, Sharon Quirk-Silva, and Marc Levine, and sponsored by the California Clean Money Campaign, AB 14 will require ads about ballot measures plus outside expenditure ads about candidates to clearly and prominently list the true names of their top three funders. It applies to ads on TV, radio, print, the internet, and more.

Sign the petition asking your Assemblymember to join AB 14 as a co-author, so California can lead the resistance against big secret money in politics!

Here’s the email the petition will send to your Assemblymember and Senator for you (customized depending on whether they’re already a coauthor or supporter):
“As your constituent, I ask you to support AB 14, the California DISCLOSE Act. It’s wrong to allow political ads to mislead voters about who paid for them. AB 14 would, for the first time ever, require contributions earmarked for ballot measures and independent expenditures to be tracked through layers of front groups — and the true funders shown on their ads.

I join with the California Clean Money Campaign and everybody else who supports the California DISCLOSE Act, including more than 100,000 Californians who’ve signed petitions for it, in asking you to not only vote Yes on the new version, AB 14, but to coauthor it to help it to pass….”

Thank you for standing with the California Clean Money Action Fund in the fight for fair elections. Please stay tuned for more ways you can help pass AB 14, the California DISCLOSE Act.

Together, we will create a democracy that is truly of, by, and for the people.
