Action items for Sisyphus

Last month I urged everyone to unleash their inner hero, to take action to right wrongs, educate the uninformed, and generally improve the world we live in. I think we all feel a bit like Sisyphus, a sort of hero of old, condemned by the gods to push that immense boulder up the mountain only to have it roll right back down. The Auburn Dam is a perfect example, which we are revisiting this month at our upcoming club meeting. All actions don't have to take a lot of effort, though, and I propose a couple that all of us can do right now.
- Vote for Dennis Campanale for District 4 State Assembly. Remind your Democratic and liberal friends that it is important to vote for him. His positions are decent and Democratic, and he actually has a chance, being the only Democrat against a field of seven Republicans. The state party has decided to back him and that may make a difference.
- Focus on women's rights for an hour. Go to the NARAL website (http://www.naral.org). Under the "Get Involved" heading , select the "Take Action" tab. Make your opinions about women's rights known to your representatives through their Featured Online Actions, including Tell the Senate to Save Family-Planning Funding and Tell Your Representative: Stop the War on Contraceptives. They have some very simple forms to fill out to help you get your voice heard.
We sometimes underestimate the power of our little actions, but we need to remember that in a democracy there is power in numbers. Maybe we'll get that boulder over the top by breaking it into pebbles.
See you March 3rd...

Paul's Pithy Pontifications
On March 3, Dr. Laird Thompson will give us tremendous insight into the looming environmental disaster-in-waiting known as the Auburn Dam. Our distinguished representative Tom "Shrink the Government" McClintock wants to spend billions of taxpayer dollars on this boondoggle two years after Congress and the California Department of Water Resources wisely said last rites over it. We publicly invited McClintock to attend this meeting and present his side of the issue. As of this writing, we've had no reply yet. Dr. Thompson is a PhD geologist with 40 years experience in oil & gas exploration and production around the globe. After moving from Texas to Auburn in 2000, he developed an interest in the local geology and its impact on projects such as the Auburn Dam. He has served on the boards of the Canyon Keepers and of Protect American River Canyons; been an outspoken critic of the Auburn Dam, appearing on TV, at meetings in Auburn and at the State Capitol; and giving lectures at a variety of venues. Laird will summarize the geology of the area, the effect of the Foothills Fault Zone both at Auburn and at the Oroville Dam where there was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake back in the 1970's, and will discuss potential seismic hazard issues that would directly affect people living in our area.

Jail book donations adding up
AADC delivered another generous box of paperback books to the Auburn Jail in February. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to the Books for Inmates project, the jail book cart is able to provide reading material for their incarcerated customers. Bring paperback books to the monthly meeting or contact Pat Burke at huberburke@gmail.com or 916.663.6663 for pick up. This is an ongoing AADC service project, so keep those books circulating.
